Theresa Rowland began teaching yoga classes in a renovated barn after returning home to Chatham Township in 1986. Her classes soon moved to a space in the Chatham Mall and the studio was born.
As the Chatham studio needed a name, Theresa was reminded of the nameplate at Dona Holleman’s studio in Florence, Italy — “Studio Yoga.” Studio Yoga became a legal entity in 1989.In 1995 Studio Yoga moved into larger space in the historic James Building in downtown Madison.
The James Building is over 100 years old and was built as a theater to provide revenue for the library across the street. Studio Yoga Madison has an office, store and 2 studios on the 2nd floor, and a large studio on the 3rd floor.
In January 2017 the students and teachers of Studio Yoga Madison were pleased and grateful that Jeffrey Heilman, DC assumed ownership of the studio. Studio Yoga Madison continues under the leadership of its new owner, while the teacher education program is directed by the founder, Theresa Rowland.0
The depth, support and the inspiration of the teachers and students make Studio Yoga Madison a very special place.
