FLY is an acronym for Frog Lotus Yoga.
FLY Vinyasa Yoga is a focused, creative and intelligent flow style, with an emphasis on alignment, form and safety. It can be easily adapted to different levels and different tempos.
Vinyasa yoga can be traced back to Indian yogi Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, (1888-1989) who is often called the father of modern Yoga. Krishnamacharya taught at the palace in Mysore India for many years. He was the teacher of BKS Iyengar, Indra Devi and Desikachar, his son, as well as Pattabhi Jois, who went on to found the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, where he taught Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga comprises of six dynamic thematic sequences, which were originally designed as a challenging exercise program for teenage boys.
Ashtanga Vinyasa first came to the USA in the 1970’s but didn’t really grow in popularity until the 1990’s when it became one of the most practiced forms of Yoga in the States.
Vinyasa Yoga is an offshoot of Ashtanga Vinyasa. It originated in the USA in the 1990’s.
Whilst Ashtanga is fixed sequences, Vinyasa Yoga is made up of creative flows orchestrated by the individual teachers who teach it. Vinyasa Yoga still adhere’s to the same breathing technique and use of the physical locks or bandhas as Ashtanga Yoga.
In Vinyasa Yoga more standing poses are woven into the sun salutations in a dance-like style. The sequences are always varied and often music is used to create atmosphere. There are as many different styles of Vinyasa Yoga as there are teachers of it!
Some examples of different styles of Vinyasa Yoga are Jivamukti Yoga, Shiva Rea’s Prana Flow, Baron Baptiste’s Power Vinyasa Yoga, Core Power Yoga, Rocket Yoga and Frog Lotus Yoga.
A FLY Vinyasa Flow class opens with a seated pranayama technique, and continues with a long thorough warm-up of all the major joints in the body. The warm-up is usually performed either seated or supine, or a combination of both. This is followed by various creative standing flow sequences, then inversions, then seated sequences, interlaced with vinyasas and finally a guided savasana and an inspiring quote.
The atmosphere created in the classes is focussed, meditative and joyful.
We teach descriptive and poetic cueing into poses and solid alignment cues whilst holding the poses.
FLY Vinyasa classes can either have a general theme, including a little of all the different categories of poses, or they may be thematic with a deeper focus on one specific area of the body.
