I first tried yoga in 2002 when a friend took me to a class at her gym. I had no idea what to expect and no idea what I was doing. The only thing I clearly remember about the class was feeling amazing when I left; I had never felt so energized and yet so calm at the same time. That was it. I was hooked.
Soon after that, I signed up for a beginning yoga class with my mom, and yoga has been part of my life ever since. I started a regular yoga practice at age 23, the same year I began a job as a high school English teacher. Teaching has always been my passion, and as my yoga practice deepened and became a crucial part of my life, it seemed natural to learn to teach yoga. I got my 200-hour certification with Theresa Murphy at One Tree Yoga in 2009. When my older daughter was born in 2010, I stepped away from teaching high school, and a little over a year later, I started teaching yoga classes at One Tree. I’m currently finishing my 500-hour certification.
When I first came to the mat, my focus was on the physical practice (asana); although I clearly felt the peace and calm yoga brings, it took time for my practice to grow to include the mental/emotional/philosophical aspects (yamas and niyamas, mediation, etc). These days, the majority of my practice takes place off the mat, but I will always love practicing and teaching asana because it provides the ground for everything else. Yoga has made me a better mom/wife/friend /daughter/sister/human, and I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to share this practice with others.
